(Create and customize table contents)
TOC
Table of Content feature of Writer allows you to build an automated index from headings in you document.
A TOC is a list or a table listing all the chapters or section titles or headings along with their commencing page numbers. A TOC is usually given in the beginning of book.
Hierarchy of headings:
Heading play an important role in a document. Headings enhance the readability of documents and make them more presentable
heading are applied at different levels heading,sub heading, sub sub heading etc.
Hierarchy of heading means the clearly defined levels of headings where higher level headings pertain to title, main headings and sub heading pertain to section and sub section.
Steps to create Table of Content
1. Create your document, use different heading levels for your paragraph heading which you want to include in table of Contents(Using styles from insert menu).
2. Place the cursor where you want the table of contents to be inserted.
3. Select Insert > Indexes and Tables > Indexes and Tables.
4. Click OK.
Update the table of contents. ( if you delete, add or modify any heading )
1. Place the cursor within the table of contents.
2. Right-click and select Update Index/Table from the pop-up menu.
Adding title to table of content
If you'd like the table of contents to have a title, enter it in the Title field.
Protecting Against Manual Changes
To protect the table of contents from being changed accidentally, check the Protected against manual changes check box. If this box is checked, the table of contents can only be changed using the context menu or the Insert Table/Index window. If the box isn't checked, the table of contents can be changed directly on the document page, just like other text
Changing The Number Of Levels
By default, Writer evaluates 10 levels of headings when it builds the table of contents. To change the number of levels evaluated, enter the desired number in the Evaluate up to level spin box.

Deleting A Table Of Contents
To delete the table of contents from a document:
1. Click anywhere in the table of contents and then right click. The context menu appears.
2. From the context menu, choose Delete Index/Table. Writer deletes the table of contents
Editing A Table Of Contents:
To edit an existing table of contents:
1. Click anywhere in the table of contents and then right click. The context menu appears.
2. From the context menu, choose Edit Index/Table. The Insert Index/Table window opens and you can edit and save the table using the four tabs described in the previous chapter.
Add or delete background to the table of contents
You can set two types of background for the TOC. You can either set a colour as the background or an image as a background. To set a colour as a background click on the colour tab and choose a colour from the colour picker. To add an image as a background select the graphic option from a combo and select the image.
To delete the background – Choose a colour from a combo box and select the no fill option from the colour picker.

The different tabs available in the insert indexes/ table dialog box as are follows:
Index/Table: This tab contains options for setting table’s properties.
Entries: This tab allows to set structure of headings and set styles of headings.
Styles: This tab allows us to change the heading styles and formattings.
Columns: This tab is used to increase or decrease columns in the table of contents as well as allows to change the width and space between columns.
Background: The user can set a background colour or change the background colour of the table of contents.
